The wall outside my basement looks horrible and I want to paint it and make it look better. What do I do?
It's time consuming, but you can spackle the cracks, then paint the paneling. I used a brush to paint the cracks, then went over the whole wall with a roller. The room was so much brighter with that awful paneling covered.
You can't just roller over them. They have to be painted with a brush first, then roller the walls. Another option might be to put up wallpaper liner, then paint over that.
You do have to fill those ridges and smooth them out. If it's the paneling with tiny little ridges you can use caulk to fill the ridge and smooth it out. My MIL had someone fill the ridges with caulk, and then put textured white wallpaper on top and painted it. Looks fantastic! I will try to get some pictures and post them.
You need to paint the ridges with a brush...then roll. Look on YouTube to see how to apply Sheetrock sparkle to fill in the grooves. It is a lot of work...filling and sanding smmothly.
use a non shrinking spackle to fill the cracks. use a straight edge to smooth it out. use a vinyl prep to coat the wall if you are going to paper it. textured paper or grass cloth covers well. if you are going to paint, I would paint in the cracks and roll the rest. filling and painting, unless you use textured paint or a shaggy roller. will always show lines of filling.
I had paneling in my mobile home - stem to stern - decided to use wall paper. Another idea is to use cottage style bead board, goes together w/ tongue & grove sides. Be sure you are using the same brand, also the SAME COUNTRY SOURCE. We had the same brand, but came to notice that the packages that were giving us trouble came from different countries. Paint after finishing the paneling, good results
