How do I get my tomatoes from splitting in the garden?

I germinated some tomatoes seeds that I bought through a survivalists site and have big beautiful plants producing nice size tomatoes with that great homegrown flavor yet many of them are spliting open before they are completly ripe. I make sure they have plenty of water so it's not from a shortage of water i don't believe.

Inconsistent watering usually is the culprit. Living in Texas, it is pretty hot in the summer. You may have to water more than once a day to keep them happy all the time, not just when you water. I live in SE Minnesota and when it is hot, like it has been for quite a bit of the spring and summer this year, I have to water my potted tomato more than once a day and it is in a huge pot. On really hot days it is up to three gallons a day over the day or it wilts. It is over six feet high now, with a heavy yield, but not far enough along to start splitting.
