i have the same problem ☹️
Hydrangea.com has good info!
There are 2 different types of hydrangea - one that blooms on old wood (the sticks left from the previous year) and one that blooms on new wood (from the current season). The old fashion mop head hydrangeas bloom on old wood so if you cut back the sticks in the fall or spring you will never get flowers. As tempted as you might be to spruce up the plant, use restraint and leave the old wood standing and you will get flowers. There's one caveat - I live in PA zone 6 and occasionally we'll have a very harsh winter - cold, snow or both and my old wood has died and therefore no flowers. Typically leaving the old wood standing will work.
One other note! Hydrangeas are an acid lover and need to be fed if not located in the proper area. If you do not feed then place lots of pine straw to increase acidity in the soil. There are many varieties so be sure to find what kind you have and feed a high bloom food in the spring right after your leaves emerge.
