you have to pull them that is all that can be done.
Like keeping dandelions out of grass, it will take more diligence and obstinacy on your side than on the dandelion and other weeds' side. Dig the weeds up by the roots every time you see them. Add some balanced fertilizer to the hill where the ivy grows. Ivy leaches nitrogen, for instance. Be ready to get the weeds out, and maybe the ivy can catch up. Best wishes 😇
You could test an extremely small area with something like round up for lawns and see if it harms the English Ivy, otherwise pulling and digging is the only way not to harm the Ivy. Vinegar, boiling water, salt, all will kill the Ivy too.
Both Janet and Jewell have given you the same advice I would; that is, hand pull. There is a "new product" which shoots a shot of steam, perfect for weeds. That's on my "next to buy" list!
Round up is bad. Bad for your health and the environment. I say keep pulling it. However, if you have the dreaded Creeping Charlie, nothing short of a nuclear blast will get rid of it.
