The growing season is much shorter than down state. Plants cannot be put outside until mid June and first snow fall can be at the end of September.

James, At the bottom of the page in the link below is a chart of types of shade grasses for what I consider northern areas (like Michgan) and Southern areas (like Alabama), but I would suggest reading the article to get as much info as possible. Good Luck and thanks for using Hometalk (btw, I found this very informative -- I live in Ohio and have a huge bare patch under a huge Buckeye tree in my back yard. Now I know what to do) :)

According to www.outsidepride.com/resources/states/michigan.html, grasses used in Michigan generally consist of bluegrass or bluegrass mixtures. Kentucky Bluegrass is the most widely used turf grass in Michigan. Also, Michigan grasses also consist of fine-leafed fescues, perennial ryegrasses, rough bluegrass, turf type and tall fescues. Refer to the Outside Pride website for additional information. Like with all plants, grasses are also chosen on the growing zones.
