Have water or fire extinguisher with you when you use the pit. my parents were navy...navy friend settled a state away...by a lake. The fire area was not in a pit or ringed. We kiddies were playing frisbee and my rt ft landed on a hot coal. second degree burn. Ouch. No more swimming for me.
