cover that area with a piece of plexiglass . It's thick, and you can drill screw holes in it do you can cover the place where the fog is scratching.

I don't think your landlord wants you putting holes in his windowsills. I have used the thick slip proof shelf liner, cheap at walmart. Cut it to size with a little overlap that you can shut the window down on to hold it in place. For extra security, you could cut it longer and wider, wrap it under and affix the ends with duct tape underneath. Think hospital corners on your bed sheets. I suppose no slip carpet pieces could work as well.

There is a plastic film that you can buy I believe it is made by 3M we bought it from Home Depot it is crystal clear and you peel the back off and place on the window - take your time or you will get bubbles in the film.

I use a heavy clear vinyl that you can get at Walmart or any craft store. Just need to tack it down. They also have repositionable shelf vinyl (houseware dept) that would protect it but would be removablue when you leave. Hope this helps!
