My Dad gave me this roadside find and I decided to create a nautical striped side table. This little table was in bad shape with peeling veneer and scratches. Because of this, I knew it would be perfect to give a makeover with fabric. I did have to do a little repair work first, but it was my hope that the thickness of the fabric would cover any unevenness in the table top. Here is the before:
After I gave the table a good cleaning and repaired the peeling veneer on the bottom shelf, I gave it a white wash with chalk paint. I wanted it to be a distressed paint finish as I felt it would blend with the nautical look I was going for.
I found the great navy and white striped fabric on clearance at the craft store. I used Mod Podge Furniture Matte which you can find on Amazon or craft stores.
Next, I cut the fabric to size for both shelves using Mod Podge to adhere it. The Mod Podge worked like a dream with this fabric. I gave it a second coat after the first dried. Finally, I added rope to the front and sides to really give it the nautical look I was going for. Look at the difference of the before and after.
Keep an eye out for roadside or thrift store finds. With a little paint and fabric you can give something headed for the trash a totally different look. This would make a great nightstand or side table. If you liked this project check out my beach coasters here http://ourcraftymom.com/diy-beach-themed-coasters-mason-jar-lids/
