If you are having trouble with large vegetation, it's time to go systemic. That means you feed the tree and it becomes poisonous to the pests. There are a number of commercial products that do this, but you need to know the type of tree/shrub and the type of insect.

if you have small trees and bushes, or newly grown ones you can put a plastic bag or sheet around the bottom of the tree/bush. Leave the plastic sheet till the tree/bush has a thicker bark .
