What grows best under pine trees?

I have several pine trees and grass does not grow well underneath. Would it be best to pound dirt up and just let the pine needles be the mulch? Or would ivy do well? I don't know if the shade is the problem or the roots. Any suggestion appreciated.

I found Hosta's to grow well under pine trees when I lived in CT
