How to make a long wooden box into a garden tool box to hang up?

I have a long wooden box with a lid that opens and says Cherokee Indian across the front. Need some cute ideas for turning this into a garden tool box that hangs on the wall with the lid opening down just enough to make a surface to set things on. Any wonderful ideas? Just need some creative wisdom to spark my own.

  • Screw it to your wall or purchase "L" brackets which attach to the wall and your box.

Fix hangers to back or screw to wall. Attach chain on inside of box and also inside lid - both sides to hold it open.. Use magnetic Catch or Hook and eye.

According to your description, if you mount it so the lid can serve as a shelf, the Cherokee Indian will be lost to the ceiling, unless this is hung low enough so it can be seen, and even then it will be upside down. I would turn the front into the part that opens, by taking the hinges off the top, and remounting them to the front, after I had carefully removed the front by tapping the corners from the inside to loosen the nails holding it together. This is undoubtedly an old fruit/vegetable delivery box, built with nails which will yield to the slightest pressure from the inside of the box, so easy does it with the hammer. You can re-use the nails to attach the old top, but pre drilling the holes would be greatly appreciated by the old dry wood. Drill thru the top, half the length of the nail into the side. Leave some for the nails to grab at the bottom of the drilled holes. After you've swapped places with the top and front, add lightweight chain to both sides to support the new shelf/lid in the open position. Tiny screw eyes for the chain.

Now that the hanging part and lid part have been taken care of, anyone have ideas for organizing the inside of the box for gardening items?

That is a great idea. Thank you.
