out of 13 avacados, I only got 1 that rooted. I put mine in just a little water to see if they will root.
i cut an avacado open the other day and it had a big root already growing....I was shocked
I have had the best luck with placing 4 toothpicks around the median of the pit and suspend it over water in a jar. Keep the water just touching the base of the pit. Leave it in the dark for a month, then add soil into the jar until you have the root covered.

Remember that most tap water has been treated with chemicals. If you want to dissipate any chlorine in your water, fill a jar and leave it in the sun for a day. Also checking your pH may help. It should be a neutral 7.
Wash; drill a small hole in three areas half way down from where it will root. That will be broad side down. Place three tooth picks into holes that are about one centimeter deep. Take a small jelly jar full of water suspend toothpicks over jar mouth, water covering 1/2 inch or up close to toothpicks. Place on fridge top for warmth. If you have a kitchen window it will root. You have to have at least three leaves up before you transplant to soil. PLEASE remember they get very very large.
