The old powder "diatomaceous earth" is a ground seashell that shatters the exoskeleton of ants and dries them out. Sprinkled around your plantings it will stop anything crawling and does not risk poisoning pets. You can find it at the Feed and Grain Store or other farm supply. Farmers use it in silos to stop beetles from eating their stored corn.
... One summer I paid the neighbor kids for lady bugs ... $1 for ten. I released them into the garden and they worked better than pesticide. LOL!
I would first stop planting, treat the soil for the ants, wait a season then start planting again. I am into vinegar, but you may need to try a few things to see what works for you.

i would sprinkle the nests with baking soda. When they eat it, it swells in their digestive system and kills them.
mix icing sugar and borax together and spread on the ground, ants love sugar and wll carry this back to the nest, they will end up eating the borax and being they can't pass air they blow up.have used this for years to get rid of ant hills.
Virtually impossible to get rid of ants, been around for millions of years. Best thing is to plan for next year by thinking about "square foot planting" above ground, with a barrier between the ground and your plantings. Remember, anything you put into the soil to kill the ants will be absorbed by your plantings. Google "square Foot Planting" for details.
i have had good luck with killing the entire nest. wait until the sun is beating down and everyone is "home". the use a low pressure stream of bug spray right into the hole. keep filling it when it puddles up after it soaks in. 8^)
All Purpose powder is great to kill out aunt nests. They take it into their colonies and it kills the whole nest.
packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are coming in if you can find it, or even on your counter in a small lid. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.
