Where in the desert do you live. I live in Idaho and have had no problem. Sometimes they can have too much water. Also if you are getting help digging them up by cats and dogs. I live in the desert area of Idaho.
My sister grows hers in pots on the porch. They get the morning sun for a few hours but are protected from the sun for twice as long. If it is in the yard, it spreads everywhere and mixes with the weeds. Best wishes 😇
I have mine where they receive morning sun only, then shade for the rest of the day. And they need more water than what is typically recommended.
Where in the desert exactly and how are you taking care of them?
You might need to add some shade for later in the day...best of luck!
I live in the Mojave Desert in California, we have temp. extremes of 115 in the summer down to 10 in the winter, I have 10 containers of Hen & Chicks that do so well, each Spring I give dozens away. Mine stay on the back porch that faces West, they get dappled late afternoon sun only, I water daily but just hold the bubbler over their pots for a few seconds and don't let the pot fill with water. Some of mine are close to 30 years old. I have never allowed them to be directly in the sun because it is so intense in the Summer. Not sure what your doing but keep them from direct, hot sun and don't fill the pots up when you water them and be sure you soil has a lot of sand in it for drainage so the roots do not rot.
Thanks so much, Patrick...it sounds like I need more sand in my soil. I really enjoy hens and chicks, so I will try this right away. Judy
