At our old house, we dug out the extra area we wanted and filled it with small gray stones...at least 4" thick. They were inexpensive. The digging and leveling was the hardest part. My husband may have used a weed fabric under the stones as well and he just hit anything that surfaced with weed killer. It looked very nice and was such a blessing to have the extra parking area.
We just finished our addition to our driveway... we did the same prep as NJ comment, but we used recycled concrete. .. the color is great and the pieces are much larger than gravel so they STAY where they're put... no washing away or tracking... we love it. We have five children and three are driving; we definitely needed more parking space, but didnt want the look or expense of concrete.
