Measure the length and the height of the area you want to cover. Do this for all areas involved. Times the length x height to get square inches for each area. Add them all up. To get square feet, divide this number by 144. You now know how many square feet of tile you need. The package your tile comes in should tell you how many square feet it will cover. I would buy an extra package but not open it so it can be returned if you don't need it.
Length x height = square feet + 10% for cuts and waste.
I agree with Lynanne3. Measure the length (one wall at a time). Then measure the height. Then multiply these two measurements and the answer is your square footage. When you purchase your new back splash, be sure to buy extra. People usually buy an additional 10% more than they need in case of mistakes. Hope this helps you. Good luck.
