I need help, please, decorating the walls above my sofa.

How about starting with the framed piece propped on the table. Then arrange several similar pieces around it or framed family pictures.

First,are you like me that likes to move furniture around when life is out of control? If so then don't put to many things up. I totally get where you are coming from,I still don't have anything over mine but it's only been a year and a half. I like circles. I would probably put metallic items over the area of different sizes and just sayings I like. I have art work on other walls and that's enough for me. I want things that keep your eyes moving so that you don't focus on just one thing. I would never put something like that with largest item in the center for me that's so typical and expected by everyone. No I love being different. As well as metallic items I would mix in wooden items in what ever color makes you smile. I would probably start so that bottom is at least 1&1/2ft above sofa so if someone stretches they don't knock anything down. So you might ask yourself why haven't I done this,it's easy,I hate the way room is laid out. I need to remove TV from here we already have one in family room. Plus I have a piano and my sofa is leather so can't be by vents or windows. I'll stick to faux leather next time I want this in family room. This room except for the psint,isn't me. It's more my husband. The sofa reclines. I hate recliners. But we searched and this we both agreed was the only thing we could agree on. I don't want TV in my room but it will end up there. Hubby thought 55inches was too big for family room so I got a 50 inch and it's great! You can't tell the difference. Really I wish he would leave decorating to me. Anyway that's what I would do. I would also mix metals. I would go to every thrift shop and goodwill to see what bargin I could find. Also the room place has items on clearance you just never know, plus tjmaxx and home goods. Have fun and add as you find other items. Please don't get those boring circular 9 circles connected. Oh and try some mirrors as well sprinkled around and a clock. You can do any shape you like or mix things up, don't do floating shelves either everyone does that, be original and express yourself in your home that you pay the mortgage for. So go wild and out of the box.

Hi Janice, what you need on those walls is 2 to 3 canvas prints or painting. You can pick them up anywhere, there not that expensive. Focus on the colours that you want to pick up off your furniture and try to find them in the canvas's. On your large wall you may need 2 and 1 on the other wall. Get something semi modern not over the top. Try and pick up the matching colours in all three. This will dress up your walls and make the room look 100% better. you can also put a fancy mirror up on 1 wall.

to begin with, I'd pull the sofas out enough to place a tall tree plant in the corner. Then painting above one and large mirror above the other!

I love your two arm chairs with the swirls, what about looking for a black iron style wall decor piece that's swirly to go directly across from the chairs? On the other wall you could do a mirror with a big black wooden frame or an art canvas, but a big one! Why not head to the local craft supply store and get the biggest rectangle canvas they have, if it doesn't fill at least half the wall space, get two! Pick up some acrylic paints in the colours of your room and make yourself an abstract piece of art-or two! The easiest is putting blobs of acrylic on the canvas and using a brush or the side of your hand smoosh the paint across the canvas. You want them to mix but you don't want any one colour to over power the other. Post photos when you are done!

I agree with Heorge. You have a lot going on on the one room there. If you were to put a bunch of things on the wall, especially your beautiful impressionistic would possibly create a very busy look and your art would not get the justice it deserves. I wouldn't know where to look first. So something more streamlined would be best in my humble opinion. Oh and I have family who put their pictures like super high. I don't say anything but it's hard on the neck looking way up high. Lol. They are also scattered around the walls in an attempt to cover the walls. So if you decided on a mono chromatic gallery, then that would look nice also. Good luck!🌷

hung a big beautiful mirror centered with couch

added some of our photos from when we married

added smaller mirrors... beautiful ones!

added different size/colors crosses

added inspiring quotes in frames etc.....

this kind of tells the story of us!

Find a piece or pieces you like. They can be any kind of wall art: painting, posters, iron hanging pieces, macramé, whatever. The important thing is that they're to your taste. You're not on a deadline, so take your time. You can start with one piece, add a mirror, or a piece you have in another room, and build from there.

try large frames filled with wallpaper you love. You can use any size frames. I used two sheets of plywood covered them with wallpaper (or fabric). Hang like a picture. You can change it whenever you like. Use two different patterns that compliment each other. Add some pillows that in same fabric (you can buy fabric to match wallpaper). A table runner to match brings the rooms together. Go crazy with color, patterns. F you are a smart shopper you can do this for less than $100.00. FYI sheets are a great for this,

Too much in one space!! Can you not move things out a little? Get rid of the floor lamp or put it somewhere else. In corners you want Large plants, if light is feasible. Plants, afghans and pillows add warmth. Way TOO much in that area, that you have squared in. " It looks like your rug is your focus point"???? Move it out!! Stretch things out, get rids of a few things.....GET out of that square box......Come up with a THEME........plan your walls on the floor and go from there......mirrors, a collage of pics, floatin' shelves with items of your theme. Helpful, I hope. IT TOTALLY LOOKS OVER crowded, seems to be your problem. If you add pictures and wall etc., you are gonna be stuck in one square area. Good Luck!!

My first impression of your room is its very tight with a strained look with everything too tight against the walls.. the floor lamp looks all wrong with the shadow it casts in the middle of the wall. I am an artist and designer, and I understand your need to make your room more you with a painting of an non- descript abstract that enhances more about colour to match cushions and/or accessories. I would suggest the sectional go more where the big chair is, sticking out into the room so as to create a coziness to your space. The big chair is dwarfing the sectional so move it into the corner with a big fern or live plant to bring life to your space with the floor lamp behind the chair.

I don't know what colours you are attracted to,... but if its on the warm side, oranges of different shades could be a nice accent colour, if the cool side attracts you, consider turquoise blue/green accents or even combine these 2 colours in a painting and then carry them through on Cushions, a floral arrangement on your coffee table and in vases etc. as far as paintings go, 2 similar unframed large painting on either side of of the corner is a suggestion..or a painting on one side of the corner with a grouping of family photos on the opposite side. the chairs on the opposite side from you sofa seem to enhance the room and create a lovely space for conversation.

morning, well I love the look but I think the focal point is the table. my suggestion: remove the end tables-replace with small tables and two small decorative lamps for soft glow. next: remove all the items on top of the center table and add a pastel color table cloth, then add some battery operated candles. that's the focal point 'the center'. now, I love the chairs but I would move the cream color one to the middle and the two other on each end but all facing the couch. now, for a touch of color I would turn the couch pillows vertical to add height and I would add 2-4 soft pastel color pillows to fill in and add color. lastly-almost :) I think a big beautiful fern plant hanging in the corner above the middle of the couch would cover that space above the couch. lastly and I mean lastly, in the wall behind where the cream color chair is, I would make my own long vertical painting... if you can nail together a thin wood frame the length of the wall and staple a decorative shower curtain (material type) to the back and there you have your own painting-or use that corner to hang family photos with inspiration words in between for décor. I would love to hang my coo-coo clock there- Walla!!! hope this helped. love the room!

Wow....you have a lot of furniture crammed into that room! Does the recliner need to stay? Can you center the coffee table ? The sectional would look better turned and used as a divider rather than the chair. Try for a couple of large pieces on the walls....perhaps a couple pieces of coordinating art work.

OK! In that case, I would still go for large brown framed pictures - Modern Abstract Art that included Turquoise/Orange/ etc. to give a Pop to your walls.

I would separate your furniture. Everything is against the wall. That maybe why you think you need something on the walls. Your walls already have decor near them. If you could, I would have two areas, maybe the chairs could be placed as a seating area near the fireplace. Then the recliner could be positioned in a corner as a reading nook. I would then place your picture on your fireplace wall over one of your couches. Try to find you a big clock to put back on the fire wall. Mantel? Try using more rugs and pillows. What about family pictures or sayings applied to your wall. Most of all make it you.

Are you ale to post another picture of where the tv is? This will help me re-configure the furniture placement.

Noticed the fluer-de-lis and the chair patterns. They remind me of the fencing or railings often metal you can find in a re-store or salvage yard. Notice some of the pillows appear to have a red or rose like some of the bricks. If you can find the railing in the pattern use a color from the brick and pillow to paint it. I would consider the strips of light to create shadow effect. I would also consider leaping an eye out of close up or artsy pictures of fences or banister from places like new Orleans who have them like that.

Then paint a tree on the wall! It needs broken up!

Look under the Decorating section of Hometalk for some wonderful ideas. Move two of your chairs to the fireplace area. Maybe you should hire an interior designer to help you with furniture. I don't think you are taking advantage of the space you have . Does your hometown have a university or community college that teaches interior design because students are always looking for clients.

Replace the floor lamp. Or move it. A large colorful print on each wall to add some color and eye appeal. Use one of the same colors fir accent pillows.

There is great potential here. But first I would remove some if the pieces and get it where it isn't so cluttered (full) looking. Maybe remove the leather recliner, bring the sofa over to the left with half becoming a 'wall'. Then arrange your brown circled chairs opposite. yiu need a focal point. I would suggest a tall piec to bring the eye up (it us too bottom heavy). At this point you can now do wall hangings on either side if the tall piece (secretary, armoir whatever). These can be wall sconces, architectural artifacts, or sets of similar pictures. The skies the limit. Then bring a second even third color into the room via pillows, nicnacks, or throws to liven up the space. Use bright blues, oranges or or whatever. Just needs a pop of color. I like the bright aquas and corals that you see everywhere. And mix things up - wood, glass, coral, plants to add interest. I know this is more than what you asked for but I felt you needed to rework some of what you already have. Good luck! Andrea

I will read the other answers but not before answering myself. It would help immensely if you would photograph your room so we see the three other walls, and the entire walls, from ceiling to floor. Right now it looks like there is nothing on the wall which means that the eye will only focus on the level of the furniture. The sectional unit seems to be squeezed into the corner and in comparison to that the recliner seems too large. If it is necessary to keep this furniture arrangement as is then art work hung over the sectional would even out the difference in the heights of the backs of the furniture, but really you do yourself a disservice by not showing the whole room, so you can get more detailed advice.

Purchase a quote from Hobby Lobby and place it at the top. Next, pick out some prints In different types of frames, maybe used some bold colors for an eye catching pop of color. Start at the center and work outwards to form a grouping of perfect pictures. You can even add in some small mirrors. Good luck!

I would put one large modern piece on one of the walls, and on. the other wall two smaller pieces that are asymetrical. I will remove one of the lamps and add a more contemporary one, it should not be to flashy so that it can give the room a homely feel, I will also remove a couple of pieces of the furniture to reduce the clutter. Add some throw pillows as well as a modern rug and add an accent wall and you are done.
