Are they in good condition? When we removed our carpet from stairs, we were lucky to have good sturdy wood. We just sanded them smooth...cause ours had tack bars to hold the carpet and they were nailed into the wood. We sanded the step part smooth and put a couple layers of quick drying poly on them. Then we painted the front of each step white, just so there was a contrast.
