A photo would be more than helpful. Does it stay out in the weather or is it a covered patio? Is it rustic or more elegant? My first thought is a picnic table top made of edge glued 2x4s but that may not be appropriate for your style.

Is the table frame square, round, oval, or rectangular? I would think of wood first of all because that is relatively inexpensive. You could shop places like Goodwill, habitat for humanity or like places to see if they have something you could use. If cost is no consideration, contact a carpenter and let him (or her) figure it out!
