Hi there, Hometalk Friends! Creating a DIY rain chain has been on my mind since spring and I finally figured out a simple, thrifty way to do it. Today, I'll show you how easy it is!
First, you'll need vinyl coated paper clips and mini metal buckets. I found mine at Dollar Tree. If your store doesn't carry them or you prefer to shop online, look here for supplies!
You'll also need a hammer, a tiny nail and equally tiny eye screws. You're going to use the hammer and nail to make a tiny hole in the bottom center of the bucket. You'll want to barely tap it and stop just as the nail makes the hole. See how much of my nail is still visible?
Next, remove the nail and twist in the eye screw, so it looks like this. Repeat this process for each bucket.
I picked up these little enamel watering cans at a yard sale ages ago, and they were the original inspiration for my rain chain. Looking for mini watering cans?
Since mine are actually napkin rings, they'll be more decorative than functional, but the buckets will be both.
Did you ever make paper clip chains when you were younger? Well for this project, you can embrace your inner child and attach two clips between each bucket/watering can to create the chain. Here, the clips are attached to the handles of the watering cans because the napkin rings don't have bottoms. If you use mini watering cans that do have bottoms, you can attach eye screws to them too, if preferred. Alternate bucket-two paper clips-watering can-two paper clips, etc. to create the chain.
Enjoyed the project?

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I have seen similar ideas for my neck of the woods--smallest of all terra cotta pots with rope// but still--how do you propose to attach it to the structure ???Not sure I have the tools to do that without damaging woodwork.
This is cute,. How do you keep the soot out of the tiny holes in this rain chain... my problem is always that roof soot blocks the holes and the water comes spilling over the edges and not down thru the chain...
How many buckets does it take to make the chain?
