Recently ,I have seen in the large box hardware stores, kits to redo counter tops to look like granite. Has anyone used these and how do they hold up to use? I wonder about peeling and cleaning and putting hot pans on them . Any comment welcome. Thanks

  • As with any laminate top no hot pots allowed. No laminate or paint will withstand that or cutting utensils. The refinishing kits sold over the counter do work well, but you must remember it is just paint your putting on the surface. If your careful using cutting boards and steer clear of abrasive cleaning methods and follow the installation instructions when applying these counter paints you should expect several reliable years on the surface. If you abuse the surface it simply will not last. These products are great for a short term upgrade without spending thousands of dollars to get the look of stone. But they are just that, short term.

This is what we are considering. I have been doing a lot of research. http://countertopepoxy.com/ It is used in bar applications so it is durable. Supposed to take 500 degree heat and water proof vs. Water resistant.

I think kitchen countertops should have a granite finish as they can sustain any amount of heat and never are discolored. They also come in various colors as well and give a great finish to kitchens. So do give it a thought.

Also....do a search here on Hometalk for chalkboard countertops. There is a blogger who actually gives update on how they hold up. They look cool. And last idea I will pepper you with, another person on here did the paint made for garage floors. Came out very industrial and kinda cool if you like that look.
