Pinterest has hundreds of ideas for this. People have done concrete, spray paint and I've even seen people use contact paper.
You can use mineral fusion paint or chalk paint so you don't have to try and sand them. You just clean them well and paint. They will both adhere well. Then just seal with a polycrylic. You can change out the hardware, as well, for an updated look.
I've had very good luck with Rustoleums Cabinet Transformations. The kits include everything you need to refinish your cabinets including the cleaner. The best part is there is no sanding required and no well ventilated area is needed. Cleanup with soap and water.

Look into chalk paint, no prep needed, then if you add liming wax it gives it a nice washed look.
