Sure fire method: FInd the main hole to the nest. Pour in some lighter fluid or a little gas. The fumes will penetrate the tunnels. Step back and toss a match. All the holes to the nest will pop. The colony is gone.

my grandfather would wait until they all came back to the nest nearly about dusk...he would then pour gasoline or a fuel in the opening and light it on fire. Attending it of course. I was about 9 or 10 when I asked him why he did that and he just told me that burning the nest is the only way to make sure you get everything from the hive to the wasps. but you have to make sure they are all home so you have to wait until dusk because that's when they come back from collecting food. He didn't used chemicals apart from burning off the fuel...because it would contaminate the ground soil and it was a working farm and he didn't want the chemicals leaching into the produce or the ground water I guess... that's what I know lol! Being swarmed while weeding around my hosta's, I was stung several times. Being thoroughly upset, I waited till dark, when they came back home, and filled the hole with quick crete.
I think that was good I was mowing my yard one day on my rider and got stung and then saw this big hole in the grass with bees all around it and going in and out of it, so I went and got a cup of gas and dumped on them and lite a match and dropped and ran and watched the little fireballs come out of that hole. But that was the end of them and the end of my story.
WOW!! I am so happy that I saw this!! I am having such a hard time with the ground wasps. My poor Great Dane has gotten stung twice so far. Both times, I've had to take him to the vet because his poor paws are so swollen. Just this morning I was thinking what can I do? And here I see this post!!
THANK YOU ALL!!!!
I've always been told to pour a bottle (or cup) of gasoline down the hole. No need to light them on fire because the fumes would get them anyway.
i have 2 nest and both are to close on opposite sides of the house. I don’t want to do the gas, match & run.
I tried the glass bowl over the opening and now I’ve really pissed them off.
I just going to spray the area around the bowl, I just want them gone!!
