Are you repairing or adding decor? It depends on the original wall and what you are doing to it. There are good videos here and online to take you through either project.
Sheetrock mud is extremely porous. You need to seal it!

I have done this to create a faux brick wall. I did paint it to bring out the colour I wanted in the room. I was rock solid, had no problem with it.
