that can be lots of fun.. i would either use a paint with a primer in it or do a coat of primer under the selected paint.. you can alter the piece a lot by varying color, design and hardware.. maybe even add a stencil

You could also use a paint that is made to adhere to surfaces without much prep, like chalk paint or mineral fusion paint. You just clean and paint the surface.
If the wood veneer has a nice wood grain pattern, you could pickle it too, to show off that wood grain. A nice white, grey or blue pickle. Minwax has a new grey stain I like too.
Veneer is wood. Unless you mean laminate or melamine.
Try sanding it and applying a primer first. Be sure you seal it after painting.
A light sanding, flat basecoat them paint as you wish. I would suggest a clear coat at the end.
