We did this with a toddler bed. We cut the legs off to give our dogs easy access as they aged. Also, I painted the bed in my favorite camouflage pattern. Then I sewed a permanent heavier material to put on the mattress and included a velcro shut/open side so I could remove it and wash the cover.
