Do you want to just clean and fix or rip them out

The black mold is an issue not to be taken lightly. Do you know its source?

Most bathroom tiles can be hammered to shatter them and then chiseled away. It is labor intensive and messy. Commercial tile installers have specialty tools for it. But, alas for us DIYers who do not have the finances for such tools. Remember, wear a filter mask when working around mortar and mold.

  • Tiles are typically installed with mastic and then grout. If you intend on removing, I use a rubber mallet and a chisel to gently pry off the wall with the least amount of damage possible. If that doesn't matter, just give it a good whack with a sledge hammer and use a pry bar - then clean up the resulting mess.

First I would investigate why you have black mold in the first place - is it a ventilation issue? Until you solve that problem - no matter what you do, the mold will come back.

If you just need to clean, I use vinegar with a good rinse following.

My advice is to remove all tiles from the wall, scrub the wall and disinfect the wall due to the black mold, and paint the wall. When that is nice and dry then i would put up all new tile. Good luck
