When can I trim these blue spruce bushes?
These blue spruce bushes are starting to take up a lot of room in my yard. Can I trim them down? And if so what time of the year. I live in PA. Thanks for any help.
I assume you are asking about the red or yellow dogwood shrubs? They are a hardy and wonderful plant. I thin them out when they need it- removing dead branches, branches that are funky and blooms that sometimes wither.
Major pruning should be done in very early spring before foliage begins to emerge. Then add some compost at the plant base and they will be happy! I don't cut them in the fall as the fall/winter color is spectacular, although fall shaping won't hurt them.
