You can grow them in jars full of water just for the long beautiful vines. In dirt, each 2-3 potatoes need a hill of loose rich soil so the roots and potatoes have room to grow. Unless you are growing some kind of tiny potatoes, you really can't grow potatoes for eating in a normal flowerpot. Best wishes 😇
You would need a real huge pot. I have mine in garbage cans that outlived their usefulness by getting cracks in the bottom or the top. You need plenty of space for the potatoes to grow. I started mine almost to the bottom of the cans and added soil to cover most of it each time they reached about 18 inches tall. My potato plant is up and over the edge by about two and a half feet and still going strong.
Yes you can just get a large pot and good dirt.
Nancy said what you have to do. Growing potatoes is different than other plants. I would add: Make sure that you have good drainage.
I start mine outside in a trench, adding soil when the plants get a foot or so high. Others use old tires, adding another on top with soil when the plants get tall. To harvest, they just remove the tires.
