How do I clean stair case rails (wood) and not take the stain off?

i know it's not stairs but it is wood! 😃

Use a wood cleaner like Old English. It is good for covering scratches, but it also cleans the wood without drying it. Also, a little bit on a soft clean rag goes a long ways. I clean all my wood with it at least once a year and a small bottle lasts more than a year or two. It comes in dark or light depending on the wood type. Hope this helps! I also clean my wooden cabinets with it!

Murphy's oil soap.

Mix one part vinegar and two parts water, spray on rails and clean with a soft rag.
