Hello Elaine; What craft are you trying to do using Styrofoam??
I use pcs of styrofoam to line my jewelry drawers. Or I bought a thing that was for use in a garage to put nails nuts etc. I cut pcs of styrofoam line the drawers and put earrings necklaces etc in ea drawer. These are see through and much easier to find my items
we wrapped 1 inch square or 2 inch square styrofoam pieces with metallic wrapper or even samples of wall paper the stores throw away, glued them on, then tied them with ribbon to hang on a tree to hand out as gifts to shut ins, nursing homes, schools etc. We put our own home made poem on them about Don't open this is love in a box, remember we are praying for you, God's love, etc. So they would know not to unwrap them. We also told them it is just a tree ornament and they read the poems.
Did you know that nail polish remover will eat into styrofoam? If you painted some on a nice piece, like maybe some letters, or house numbers, it will leave a depression where it contacts the remover. You could stencil with nail polish remover, and if you are judicious enough to do just enough remover, you could make it look like granite! I've seen it done with a spray paint in a texturized green (they add something to the spray paint to give it texture) and then use your stencil over that, to do whatever you might like... just an idea, good luck!
