how fun, I would of course paint the entire stool add padding to the top area, cover with a fun print and tuft the bottom area I might add either a stencil or fun paint
Hi Diane :) Of course you can! Paint it! Decoupage it! Seal it! Use it! ;) or just prime it, paint it, sel it and use it ... it's up to you ;)

painted step stool (like yours) in 1950s style white steps and red legs ;) and then maybe center a decoupage print in the middle of the top step (?)

If you do decoupage, I saw that Mod Podge has a product out specifically for furniture. It has a harder finish.
