Can wood stair spindles be changed to iron by homeowner?

My wood stair spindles are builder quality and poorly done. Can I replace with ordered spindles myself?
Yes you can. It's not very hard. My son did this in his house and it looks great. He replaced them with wrought iron spindles from Home Depot. I am sure other stores like Lowe's has them also.
Sure- may take some 'adjustment' to get them to 'fit' in the existing holes for the wood pieces - take careful measurements!! You may need wood filler to compensate if the ends are smaller- HD and Lowes are usually really good about helping DIY'ers !

Yes, you can replace the wood with iron and it is fairly simple. You will have to measure the internal area of each opening and have something fabricated using the iron of your choice. The unit will come as one piece with the spindles/pickets attached to a flat bar frame top-and-bottom. You slide it into the opening and screw in through pre-drilled holes in the flat bar. This way the holes left from removing the wooden spindles are covered by the flat bar. There are loads of choices for spindle/picket styles you can choose. Don't know about your budget but I would look at replacing with a wrought iron fence.Just be sure that fence posts will fit into openings on bottom and won't need top rail already in place. Just a thought.
