Give it a light sanding ....then paint it
Either lightly sand it and use chalk paint or strip it with Citristrip or a similar product .
I have used "Cabinet Transformation" kit on dozens of projects so far and they have all turned out great. No sanding is required. Check this out at Home Depot or lowes, one kit. Will do several projects.
Chalk paint...no prep
I suggest you sand down to the bare wood.
Chalk paint will paint over ANYTHING w/o sanding. You only need to clean the surface so it's free of dust, dirt, or any oils.
