Most likely it has to do with the species. There are two types of hydrangeas. One blooms on new wood and the other blooms on old wood. When you prune your plant and it uses old wood to flower, you are cutting off all the buds that are forming. Here's an article that explains it and what you can do.

There is one called Endless Summer that blooms on both old and new wood. It is recommended to prune that one at the end of August if necessary but be careful not to cut of the buds from the new wood. It is also recommended not to prune Endless Summer unless absolutely necessary.
HTH
Is it possible they were not properly pruned this year? Hydrangeas need to be pruned every year to bloom. Cut the finished stocks down in the spring before they start to grow. Remember to fertilize.
Good luck to them!
Mine wasn't blooming either, till I cut all the dead stalks at the base, and cleared any tree leaves away from the entire bottom of the plant. Wait until the first signs of new leaf growth appears at the beginning of spring. That way you won't accidentally cut any live branches. If you have a dry spell, make sure that you water it every few days. Adding some Miracle Bloom wouldn't hurt either. Good luck!
I remove the faded blooms as soon as they are spent but don't touch anything else until early spring. I do suggest you remove any shoot that has any signs of disease asap.
You might have pruned them too late.
