If you use chalk paint, there is nothing you need to do but paint. The wax after is the best part and the most fun.
Be sure the veneer is intact before painting. If not, repair with wood putty or Bondo before starting.
I now use the product "KILZ" as the primer before painting anything dark a lighter color. It works wonderful on wood and drywall to cover stains before painting.
