How to re-stain a cherry topped dining table .

It was ruined by a table mat and most of the original stain has been cleaned off. I need step by step and the kinds of stain to be used. Also, I would like to know what could be used to have a hard surface on top so that I could use place mats.

Talk to a pro at your local paint store! Sherwin Williams is my go-to.

I have all cherry mid-century furniture. If the whole top is ruined, I would strip off just the top, or if its one board/panel, tape it off and then using a stripper to remove stain. Then you are going to have to mix the stain to match or have it done at a real paint store. I always take a drawer or chair with me for this process. Test the stain under the table or chair. Then I like to apply the stain in layers to achieve the depth I like after a quick sand and tack clothe to remove any dust. Then on good furniture I like to shellac, buff with 0000 steel wool and paste wax.
