What is the best wood filler to use on furniture?

I have a dresser that I plan to paint...but, first need to repair some scratches on the sides.

A sandable and paintable wood filler can be used. Directions for use are on most containers.
Make should you use a stainable filler. I like this:
You can repair wood scratches by putting a damp cloth on top of the scratch and then running a hot iron over the cloth.
