What kind of curtains? Bedroom, living room, kids room, etc? Make yourself or purchase?
Do you know the fabric content? Some have tages on them with cleaning instructions just like clothes. When I purchase curtains or drapes, I keep one of the package inserts in my warranty file just for this purpose. If you are not sure if machine washable, I would err on the side of caution and have dry cleaned.
Depends on the Material -- they may need to be drycleaned, -- are they stained w/ something? Heavy 'formal' curtains can be vacuumed with the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner -- if they are small, and washable - you need to know what the material is, -- if there is a liner Dry cleaning would be the way to go - would be different material; if Blackout curtains - some are washable at home, some must be drycleaned ---
You need to check the care label for directions. Most can be laundered on a gentle cycle and then line dried out of direct sunlight, then pressed or steamed. I hang mine up directly from the washer until they are dry and then I use a steamer instead of an iron.
