Hello Sleland :) I am posting a few weblinks below to help give you ideas, in case you don't already have some. While formal has its place, the lifestyles of the current times also call for more of a relaxed family type of setting that is just as comfortable with wine and a classic dinner as it is with beer, popcorn, and card or board games. I hope you find help within one of these links to make a decision you will be happy with for many years. Thanks for using Hometalk :)

turn it into cocktail lounge.round table, barrel chairs ,hutch? Take out dishes and put in collection or turn into bar stuff. If you have six chairs, too in front of window with small table.
First things first, being a formal dining room, I'm sure you had a fancy chandelier hanging in the middle of the room. I would suggest perhaps a nice ceiling fan with a good light in it. Remove anything that is too "formal" needs to be changed to a casual look by painting or whatever goes with the look you want. Any built ins can easily be changed as suggested above by putting in your own stuff that you will use in the casual area. If you have carpet or hardwood, put down throw rugs that go with your new décor.
You can put a long farmers table with chairs and benches. If the light fixture is too formal, try changing the look. Pinterest has great ideas on fixture redo.
