Put thin floating shelves like the nail salon so you can see the colors and decorate the wall at the same time.
Here's an easy method I'm planning on trying:

There are inexpensive spool holders you can purchase where crafts or sewing notions are sold. You can also make one with a board and pegs or a stair step of holders like in the picture. To purchase your own averages around $15. This small one holds 100 spools, but they come in many sizes. This is a small one.
Some of these may be repeats but just in case:

I like this one because you can put it vertically. If the rods are too big you could probably put smaller, metal threaded rods, or big long nails.

I took an old cabinet door and hammered in a long finishing nail at an angle every 1 1/2". I hung it on the wall over my sewing table. The spools stay on and they're easy to see and grab. You could just use a piece of plywood or 1" lumber in place of the door.
