There are gas stains on the outside of my pans. How do I clean the stainless steel pans to remove them?
Is it burned on stains or discoloration? I used to have a set of these and I used Bartender's Friend for scrubbing them. The copper bottoms I cleaned with ketchup.
This sounds crazy...but try putting a couple of tablespoons of catsup into the pot, and heat it slightly. Smear the catsup around the bottom of the pot to cover the whole surface. Let sit for a few minutes, then wash with soap and water. The acid in the tomato catsup will help remove stains and discoloration from stainless steel.

I always use bar Keepers Friend on my stainsteel pots. It gets them clean as new.
Barkeepers friend
I own stainless steel cookware which I clean successfully with a product called Bartenters Friend. It works great both on the inside and will clean the copper bottoms like a dream also, too.
I'm sorry that product should have been Bar Keepers Friend. They chanced the name way back!
I deal with stubborn pr burnt on crud by putting the pot in the sink, shaking some baking soda on it from the box and then putting hot water on. Let it cool and try to remove crud. It should go away or at least be loosened. if still there, pull out the handy Brillo or SOS pad and scrub. Good luck!
