Unless you are very adept at sewing in zippers, have the proper zipper presser foot for your sewing machine, and willing to purchase a durable non fraying fabric that will withstand the tugging and pulling of the zipper, proper foam padding that can be stitched through, I would say that consdering the time and work put into the project, and the total $ cost of all the materials, to do this yourself would just not be worth it.
While, yes, it is possible to make one yourself, the more cost effective, time effective, and route of least frustration to arrive at a result that a durable protective cover is made for the purpose, is just to purchase one.
There are lots of styles available, here are a couple to get you started and basic instructions. Happy sewing!
