Are you in the South west? Then it's time to start your seed and plan irrigation lines. Add the compost to your beds and bring in lots of clean wheat straw! You can cover your beds now in anticipation of transplants going in the ground!

Are you done done gardening for the year? Then it's time to chop and drop all the vegetation. Cover with a good layer of wood chips to over winter. Clean up and put away all growing structures and tools. Want new beds for the spring? Now is a good time to build!

You don't say what area you live in, but in Northern California, I rake up debris from around my perennials, pull as many weeds as I can, plant bulbs and trim off any dead wood. When the rainy season is near and it's getting cooler I clean my garden tools and oil the joints on my pruners and have any sharpened that need it.

When it comes to pruning, I use the old farmer's method: from Spring thru Fall, only prune during months that have the letter "R" in their name. For example, you should prune in April but not in May. May does not contain the letter R. So the soonest time I will prune is September. I have used this method for many years and it has always worked for me. That being said, In September I will prune my perennials. I will also start taking out my annuals. Depending on the weather, I might until October to pull my vegetable plants. Gather any seeds that I will use next year and lay mulch around trees. I hope this helps you. Best of luck.
