Hello Karin, You can use bricks, pavers or even large rocks as boarders. You might also consider railroad ties or landscape timbers. If you're up to it, you could also use a flat faced shovel and dig a three inch trench to use as a boarder. Hope this helps you. Best of luck.
What is used in your current hardscaping? My house had slumpstone topped with used brick. When I added borders I went with used brick to tie everything together to look intentional instead of introducing yet another material. My house and yard are small, wanted a cohesive look. If that is not a concern, explore different options! Several Hometalkers have used wine bottles, plates and other fun whimsical elements.
you could make a 16 inch width or more of mulch in front of your flowers and put stepping stones or garden ornament statues on the mulch or filled urns with annual flowers
Also consider if you want it to stick up or be flat. If it's flat you can mow right over it, but if not, you'll have to edge it on a regular basis.
Good luck!

Check craigslist under the FOR SALE section and check FREE and MATERIALS. I always see folks giving away bricks and pavers when they redo their lawns/walkways, or construction folks giving/selling surplus.
