One possibility might be to line the inside of the fan cabinet with acoustic fiberglas insulation. It is semi-rigid and cut to fit with a knife and glued to the metal walls of the fan cabinet. Should be available at you local sheetmetal/ HVAC shop.
I would check with one of the places that installs them to see what the options are that will not create a problem with the unit you have. They will probably be able to five you good, safe suggestions.
Yes, I relocated my bedroom vent just outside the door into the hallway ceiling. They say that the return vent should pull from the same area that it delivers to, and my bedroom is on it's own unit. So, I was concerned with that being an issue, but I can't stand any noise when I am sleeping. So, I did it anyway. I have not had any issues, and I sleep much better. You could also consider sound proofing cloth beneath the unit, depending on exactly what your particular issue is. Before doing anything, I would check the return vents. If the noise is being caused by the fins, you can get a tool to bend them out just a bit to stop the it.
Do not use insulation on the inside as Lindon suggests. Any insulation will break down and be spread into the living areas. Insulating the outside of the duct is acceptable. Most HVAC installers will take the closest route for a main return vent. They try to find a central location for the vent and as close to the unit as possible. Less work for them. That's why a lot of vent locations are also eyesores. Any vent can be moved or relocated as long as it doesn't affect the operation of the unit. I would call a HVAC company and see what they suggest (free estimate). You can use them or do it yourself if your capable.
