My DH wears sleeveless undershirts and no matter what we try they always turn a dingy gray. How can we keep them white or make them white, again?

Dry clean, use a carpet cleaner, or use an up-to-date laundromat whose machines don’t agitate.
I would take them to a coin-operated laundromat. Use a jumbo front loader to wash them. Use your regular laundry soap and add a couple of tablespoons of white distilled vinegar to the load also. If you don't want to dry them in a machine, place them outside on a sunny day. Best of luck to you.
Throw them in the washing machine and then tumble dry with clean old sneakers or flip flops to help them plump up.
