If it is a paneled door, paint the door white and then paint the panels a different color of your choosing. If it is a solid door, consider vertical or horizontal stripes or, even better, strips of wood contrasting the brown.
same color as the walls if 'flat'; if paneled, then wall color, with panels white,
I have kept doors the darker color but the woodwork white. It looks good but you could also strip the doors and go with a lighter color of stain or do a white wash on them.
Hi JoAnn! Many kitchen schemes show dark cabinets with a lighter backsplash and floors in complementary colors. Likewise, if your woodwork is dark, a soft caramel or cream
color for your cabinet doors would complement the dark wood without beomg so stark as white. You can get an idea as to how that would look in magazines such as House Beautiful, which also have online websites.
I think paining the doors will add a fresh, clean look. I have white doors and white trim. They look nice. Once decorate your walls and add color with decorations, throw pillows and throws, your white doors will not be noticeable.
We moved into a 1980 condo complex last Sept. In our old house, we had pecan/walnut woodwork/doors and kitchen cupboards. Now we have all white cupboards, woodwork and doors, so nice and bright, more modern looking. Our walls are med. tan, our ceilings are white too. We really like it. If you check out Parade of Home tours, or Open Houses on weekends you will see many homes have white cupboards and woodwork. Also check TV remodeling shows too.

JoAnn...I recommend going to houzz.com. In my house practically everything is Victorian White (I think that is the color ) which was chosen because it matches our sofa and love seat exactly . And I have two zebra fabric on Parson's chairs. And I have a gold and black four panel Chinese screen on the wall. White is so refreshing. Houzz.com is really where to get ideas.
