How to replace in door basement steps without excessive cost

older home, older wooden steps going to basement, about 10 steps, without excessive cost, would it be advisable to just take off the top piece of wood, leave the side streamers that hold it in place on cement wall, keep it there if it shows still in good shape

    if the side pieces are sound - I'd just replace the risers and steps - they come pre cut in a variety of sizes. If there is no handrail for safety sake you should add one

    If the stringers are in good shape you can just replace the stair thread.

    I agree with Landsharkinnc, there would be no reason to replace the side streamers if they are still sound.

    Use concrete blocks and strong zip ties to hold them together. We made steps out of these two items for our camper. Works great. Easy to remove.
