This is the ugly eye sore that I see every time I water the garden or take my laundry off the line. It took us one day to complete and I'm very pleased with the transformation.
That awful grey stain just had to go! I power washed and sanded.
Here's another view of the mess around the garden hose.
I checked our weather forecast to make sure we had at least 2 consecutive days of dry weather before applying the stain. I used Superdeck Deck and Dock elasometric coating in brown. You can purchase it at Home Hardware in Canada or Walmart in the U.S. and specialty paint stores.
We removed the patio stones and sod. Then, put a layer of landscape fabric underneath. I had leftover pieces of lumber from a raised garden project we had built so we used them to frame the area. I stained the lumber the evening before before he installed them. He drilled 3 holes in each piece of and attached into place with 18 inch rebar posts. The last thing we did was lay a 6 inch layer of river rocks on top.
I am always looking for a bargain when it comes to DIY projects. This only cost $48 to complete. I purchased the river rocks from a local landscaper who sells in bulk to contractors and to the general public. My local hardware store was selling the same river rock for $16 a bag. I used 8 bags for this little area. I put it on extra thick because I don't want to have to ever weed under those stairs again!
Enjoyed the project?
